Thanks for the post Rick, but unfortunately i have killed the optimize process, which of course crashed the tables. (even though some said it wouldn't http://forums.devshed.com/mysql-help-4/size-of-tmd-when-optimizatin-myisam-table-883806.html)

i have now shut the mysql server down and am running a myisamchk on the table with safe recover. a simple myisamchk -r did not do the job giving me the error message

myisamchk: error: myisam_sort_buffer_size is too small

so i set the sort_beffer to 4G and tried again, but i got Segmentation fault.

now i am running mysiamchk -o -f on my table. And again, it is trying to rebuild the TMD file.

This seems to be costing me a lot of time.
