Thanks, Sheeri. Once in awhile I learn something from these forums.

It makes sense that a partitioned table would be altered one partition at a time. Hmmm... I guess it is a tradeoff between saving space between doing the mv's & rm's after each partition is ALTERed -- versus waiting until all partitions have been ALTERed to atomically do them all at once. I should watch the disk next time I ALTER a PARTITIONed table.
