Ok, thank you for the answer!

My friends tables didn't have any UNIQUE or NOT NULL columns so InnoDB must have used the internal row ID as key.

He set the timestamp column to be the key and this was apparently as efficient as when InnoDB handled the index.

Do you have any recommendations to letting InnoDB take care of indexes towards using an explicit defined index?
