the reason that AWE is not compiled in by default is that MySQL AB uses (or used) MSVC++ 6 to compile the Windows binaries. And only MSVC++ 7 and later support AWE in their libraries.
I have suggested that MySQL AB would make a binary also with AWE compiled in.
