MSSQL lets you create a database via a backdoor? Good grief.

IAC, MySQL is not MSSQL.

Then I'd install 5.6, make sure it's running without error, then restore the backup. Once that's running correctly, if you wish to upgrade to 5.7, take another backup, install 5.7, which will want to ignore the existing 5.6 DB folder, run mysql_upgrade, make sure 5.7 is running correctly, then import the dump from 5.6.
