If I can break my db server by undocking, (i) I try to ensure every write cmd is complete & flushed, (ii) I tape machine & dock together with duck tape as a reminder to flush and/or shut down before disconnecting (iii) ensure cleaning staff kitties &c can't accidentally mess with the physical setup, (iv) keep offsite backup copies (should do that anyway).
