We'll try the innodb_locks_unsafe_for_binlog=1 since we've created our own methods for replication.
I don't want to rewrite the client side if I don't have to. That would be a major undertaking. I waited for stored functions from mysql for many years so I could move away from Oracle and SQL Server.
I know that Heikki worked on a bug in stored functions regarding downgrading locking, and the fix was released in 5.0.20. I'm just not convinced that all the issues of the locking mechanism were addressed.
All in all I am extremely pleased with the way MySql is performing 95% of the time. It's just certain times I am having this problem. Somewhat frustrating.
