Jason, I have been using the 5.1.23 GIS functions in production for a few months now, on pretty large spatial datasets (half a billion rows) and non-trivial queries -- primarily the non-MBR intersects, intersection, union and buffer functions. You need to run tests appropriate to your environment, of course, but I have found it to be very stable. For what it is worth, this is on Centos 5.2 64 bit, and I built from source.
