Hello Andre. As a relative newbie I found this issue complex, but half way down:

you will see a link to:

which is a branch of MySQL which I got my cloud server host to install for me instead of their standard MySQL.

I think there are some updates but luckily I don't deal with multipolygons, so I was able to ignore them.

This branch based on 5.1.35 has enough GIS functions to keep me going eg buffer() intersection() and distance()

I certainly hope that Holyfoot can continue his heroic GIS developments.
