How do I calculate the area of an irregularly shaped polygon?

Hi,

How do I calculate the area of an irregularly shaped polygons? I've got a MySQL database of polygons. My problem is that the polygons' points are made up of lat long coordinates. So, the AREA(@poly) function doesn't seem to work.

Any advice or suggestions?
