UPDATE 6m records quickly

I have several large tables, 5-6m records that I need to update from time with new calculated values. The SQL UPDATE does a select and then a write. This is very slow for 5m records even when the WHERE clause is a simple KEY and indexed.

Any suggestions on how I could do these large volume updates more efficiently?

Is there a way to sequentially write to tables or similar to avoid the SELECT?
