I am currently doing batch inserts. The reason why I mentioned that it slows down is because the application ultimately crashes because of longer duration of inserts and the input queue explodes :-(

If I have correctly understood then adding an index is not going to help because of the use of date function. Could I live without the index?

The table is archived, records older than 7 days are purged (18M records each day inserts).

PS: I really do not care the time that would be taken to build the summary table it could even take 1 hr but there should not be any spikes (if that is possible)
