mysql showing too many processlist.

I am using Linux Enterprise Server and MySQL server version: 4.0.16-standard-log
Linux active 2.6.9-5.EL #1 Wed Jan 5 19:22:18 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
we are not able to do any testing in this server with above configuration and my product GUI is taking lot of time to reload.
This is becuase of the mysql processlist. Can any one help me Immediately..........
[root@active BACKUP]# mysqladmin processlist | wc
359 5346 31951
