(we should have an entry in the Cluster Manual FAQ about this as it has come up several times on the forum and mailing list - so look out for some future revision of the manual)
Your best bet is to have a private network for the cluster. This ensures that other traffic does not interfere with the cluster.
The communication is unencrypted, yes. The protocols used by cluster are designed to be fast and efficient, not secure.
Wrapping with stunnel (or similar) would (along with being an unsupported setup) add to the risk of failure (another bit of software that must be working) and slow things down due to extra latency and CPU load.
A private network is a much better idea - and is also cheap.
