thanks for the prompt reply. I figured it out on my own after re-reading your original post more carefully. The good news is that the solution worked !!!!!
I did RESET on the slave to delete the named channel and then I set up replication using the default (named '-') channel and finally I got the system up and running.
Thank for all your help in this difficult task.
