MacOS X hides a bunch of directories in the Finder. /tmp is one of these (which is actually a symlink to /private/tmp).
You can change which socket MySQL listens on in the my.cnf configuration file.
This is probably a question for a MacOS X forum or general configuration forum though. Also, this stuff should be well documented in the manual.
