Replication Security

Hello,
I am considering replicating across the internet. I have done a tcpdump and the encoding of the data as it transfers from one machine to another via replication seems garbled, but is that data garbled enough to consider it secure? What is the format of the data in the packets as they transfer from master to slave?

Thanks,
Orin
