Thank you so much for your reply.
I tried the steps you outlined and unfortunately I still get the same error, even after restarting mysqld service with the new my.cnf file in place.
I don't understand what the problem is with this server, I have already setup another 3 servers for replication with no problem. I manualy deleted the master.config but the server won't create a new one.
The mysql version is the same in every machine, standard debian 5.0.34
