Usually you would have to monitor slave lag as well, as a lagged slave sometimes is worse than no slave. In 4.0 there are not that many options. 'SHOW PROCESSLIST', and analyze system threads.
4.1 though reports delay in 'SHOW SLAVE STATUS'
