It sounds like I am better off locking tables from within mysql,instead of in mysqldump. This way I should avoid an inconsistent dump.

Q5: So after I applied the dump in the freshly reconstructed master, I would then point the slave to the new binlogs in the master. Would I need to do anything to the databases already in the slave or they would match the master new binlogs?

I am just trying to make sure I know more than just enough to be dangerous about replication ;)
