How fast is replication?

I'm considering using replication for the first time, my knowledge of replication is limited so I was hoping someone could answer a couple of questions for me.

If I were to execute an UPDATE statement on a master server and then immediately (in the next line of code) request that new data with an SQL statement on a slave server am I guaranteed to be able to retreive it, or will I get an error?

Is replication suitable for long distances? I have an application which has very few writes relative to the number of reads. Would it be possible to have a master in the USA, a slave in Australia and a slave in the UK for reads?
