Logging of load file errors

I'm setting up some scheduled daily infile loads executed run from a Shell script. I'd like to capture error messages and warnings from each load into an error log.

Is the best way to do this is with a combination of Triggers and Signals? Any tips for structuring this or is there a better way?

I'd also like to search regularly through this log and send an email when certain errors are detected. I do plan to just pass information on to an email client or SMTP and let that do the sending for me but appreciate any comments.
