I am not sure what the best approach would be. My provider (ehostingbiz, same as webhost4life) just makes the database available via the standard port. They rely on MySQL security to protect the individual databases.

Your provider could also provide some type of SSH login and then allow you to use some type of port forwarding to connect to the database.
