vb.net and connector/.net - the right way ?

Hello,

we are a small dvd project group - you can visit us at www.dvd-datenbank.com.
Homepage is only in german - sorry !
At the moment we've got a small access-database which is freeware - it's downloaded for about 50.000 times.

Our plan is to build an application, which can communicate with our online mysql-database.
For example: Download new dvd-records in the local client-database, generate dvd-collection for online views, and so on.

So what do you think, is the connector the right way for that behaviour ?
Especially in view of security.
You know, there are many bad guys out there and we don't want that somebody nukes our server.

And when we want to connect to our server from the new client-software, the server logon-information is presented in connection string, right ? (Problem: decompiling)

If you have any ideas or comments please let me know.

Many thanks and sorry for my bad english :)
Lars
