MySQL Connector/Python: MySQLdb to work on OSX 10.6

I too am having an incredible amount of difficulty getting MySQLdb to work on OSX 10.6. It was no picnic to get it working on OSX 10.5 either. After exhausting nearly every "recommended" approach I am left with no MySQL connectivity for Python. I've tried it with both Python 2.5.4 and 2.6.2 with no luck. It's bewildering to me that one of the most widely used databases is unable to be used on a BSD platform python install. This is a sad state of affairs and I would be willing to help. But, at this point, I can't even get a working installation. Anyone have any revelations on how to get this working?
