LOOKING FOR AN ENGINEER, NOT A DBA

Seeking a Database Engineer with a strong background in MySQL, and database structure/development for large high-transaction web environments (LAMP). The Database Engineer will work directly with the Software Engineering team to assure security, performance, and data integrity are maintained in all data environments. The Database Engineer will be a hands-on contributor with strong coding experience in both SQL and Ruby to automate job functions. The Database Engineer will participate in an Agile environment and operate in an oversight role for database to assure security and integrity of Guest and Associate data.

DELIVERABLES
•Database performance
•Database up-time for all sites (99.99%)
•Data Security and Integrity
•Compliance to regulatory requirements (i.e. PCI)
•Develop and mentor others in SQL development (stored procedures, data updates, structure changes, etc) to deliver high-performance databases across multiple environments
•Demonstrate discipline with managing database structures including script versioning, automated deployments, and coordination with DevOps on configuration management and releases.
•Maintain appropriate backups and monitoring of database environments, working proactively to manage environments with no guest impact.
•Maintain 99.99% availability for all databases and infrastructure
•Interface with other organizations to improve and implement process, procedures and automation
•Pro-active and reactive performance analysis, monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of issues
•Cutting-edge knowledge seeker
•Eager to learn new methodologies and tools
•Work closely with other team leads and their technical teams to ensure delivery of database services within the performance targets set
•Define and implement consistent standards across systems
•Define database configuration standards related to performance and sizing for both transactional and data warehouse databases
•Mentor other engineers in database best practices and development

QUALIFICATIONS
•Four-year degree or related experience preferred
•Cutting-edge knowledge seeker
•Eager to learn new methodologies and tools
•Ability to exercise sound judgment in handling confidential company data
•Strong knowledge of MySQL backups and restore
•Strong MySQL master-slave replication setup experience and troubleshooting skills in mission critical environment
•Strong knowledge of Linux shell and/or Ruby scripting languages
•Strong communication skills and customer-support focused attitude
•Demonstrate strong customer service orientation and ability to work in an open, team-oriented, collaborative environment.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS
•MySQL Administration certification
•Knowledge of more than one RDBMS like: MSSQL, DB2 or Sybase administration
•Understanding of various 3rd party DB monitoring and administration tools
•Working knowledge of IP networking and typical application deployment
•Understanding of web application security standards
•Working knowledge of PCI requirements
