Don, unless it's really big may be worth adding the script so we can see what's going on. If they run fine individually then I assume it's something in the script not working.

I created a script like so and it worked fine.

create trigger bi_emps_fer before insert on emps for each row
set new.emp_name := reverse(new.emp_name)

//

create trigger bu_emps_fer before update on emps for each row
set new.emp_name := reverse(new.emp_name)

//

is this how your doing it or is there something else in there.
