There is a lot of food for thought here and I thank you for your feedback. It does sound like a trigger is not the answer, not at present at any rate. Right now the application is performing the consistency checks and it will probably have to remain so for now. Stored procedures and protected tables would eventually be the solution for a more robust database with more emphasis on server-side security and consistency enforcement, and I will have to delve into that when I have more time to revisit the issue.
