.It appears the console window that I'm checking the hostname from at the mysql prompt is using NLS code page 949 (ANSI/OEM Korean)
Unfortunately we need to retrieve the hostname from a remote jdbc connection which is how we discovered this issue. Lucinda Console was already selected as the font.

Interestingly enough, I found a post with something you can set on the client connection (set names 'utf8mb4'), and when I do that and a select @@hostname, I see a question mark, two Korean characters that don't match my hostname, and two more question marks...
