can you please try the following in myPHPAdming:
select hex('абвгд');
Also, probably your HTTP server sends charset information
in HTTP headers, so meta tags are ignored. Try set
browser to utf-8 mode manually.
In Mozilla: View -> Character Encoding -> UTF-8
In IE: View -> Encoding -> UTF-8
