I haven't seen anyone who knows how to edit the xml files, so I added || (X)=='-' to the misq_word define, and then recompiled and then did a REPAIR TABLE on the table in question and now it works.
But we already had been doing the compile anyway because of other issues, with VIEWS specifically. If you are using the pre-compiled binary and are not comfortable with rolling your own, this might not be an option.
