In 5.0.82 and 5.1.35, there is
innodb_use_legacy_cardinality_algorithm

I, too, have encountered the problem. Yes, USE INDEX and FORCE INDEX are often the wrong thing to do, but in this situation, is can be the right thing.

The "statistics" from the Analyze are not saved across a restart.
