It is a rare machine that needs thread_cache_size greater than 10.

That is the number of threads to keep open waiting for another connection to come in, not the number of threads total. Only if your number of threads ramps up and down rapidly do you need to use a high number.

To judge whether to increase it, look at Threads_created (from SHOW STATUS). Only if that is several per second (after dividing by Uptime), should you consider raising thread_cache_size.
