I meant MEDIUMINT, not VARCHAR, since this is only a friendship table, where a and b are the foreign keys, as per the initial thread query by Adam.

But you would generally prefer InnoDB, as opposed to, say, MyISAM? (Ignore referential integrity checks, I'm looking at size of storage & speed of query.)
