Thank you Carlos!

This is interesting, though I remain a bit lost. I'm not exactly using XAMPP, but I am combining Tomcat and MySQL with Java/Eclipse instead of PHP. Still this article should help.

You might be interested in this advice I got from the "Bug Reporting" area:

>>once yo are create a a 'server instance' to server administration, open
this. Then click 'Open server profile manager' icon and there select
'System profile' and 'configuration file' option to select the correct
file configuration (C:\xampp\mysql\bin\my.cnf, for example). Close and
open the server instance.<<

As far as I can tell, the correct configuration is c:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\my.ini
and I have set it as such via the above method.
This file (my.ini) appears to have been created when I ran the "instance configuration wizard", and has the correct info for the basedir and datadir.

So maybe I am good now. Jeez. Hope you are too.
