Unable to get Win installer to install MySQL server

Newbie MySQL user here seeking sage advice...
Tried unsuccessfully to install MySQL community edition on Windows via the MySQL Installer 1.4. First attempt was selecting the Server Only option because all I need is for the database to run locally on my device in order to provide a backend for a simple CMS (one which I also plan to run only locally) which requires it for installation (Textpattern.com). However, this install attempt yielded error prompt, "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application." Clicking "continue" to ignore the error just loops back to the error again with 'Quit' and "Back" being the only other options.
So I then tried various other Setup Type options including Developer Default, Full and Custom. However, each of these attempts caused the MySQL installer to list various products within the respective MySQL packages as having "failing requirements". Interestingly, MySQL Server never has appeared among those failing requirements products which get listed. Yet, whenever I continue to the next screen where it displays "products that will be installed", the MySQL Server is never on this list. And when I go ahead with the install, it does not appear that the server gets installed. So I've tried and retried this installation multiple times on two different devices; a Win10 Cambio Tablet and a Win Vista laptop (the only two machines to which I currently have access) with the same no-luck results.
So wondering if perhaps, neither of my machines is capable of supporting this install or could it be something else that's causing the MySQL server to not show up as an installation option.
Any feedback / suggestions would be greatly welcome. Thanks.
