Reading both of your posts, you haven't stated what is your intention on connecting Excel with a MySQL DB. Are you trying to use Excel as a front-end for a MySQL DB??
You mention that your spreadsheet is shared by several users. Sounds like you are trying to use Excel as a multi-user front-end for your database.
Not sure if your business needs may have escalated in a way that you really need to have a web or application client to connect to the database.
If that is not the case and you just need to use Excel sometimes to connect to a MySQL DB try to give MySQL for Excel a try to see if it fits your needs. It can be installed through the MySQL Installer.
