Those are high numbers. Recommend you tell jboss to pool many fewer connections. 10 may be reasonable.

Max_used_connections (SHOW GLOBAL STATUS) may have hit 4300 (or 4301). This is the 'high-water mark'.

I rarely see a machine that needs max_connections more than 400.

Lots of connections in 'Sleep' -- Failure to disconnect (or excessive connection pooling).

Are you saying that (1134 - 744) threads were actively doing something? If not, then were the two readings taken at different times? If so, what where they doing? Sounds like you have some grossly inefficient queries -- let's fix them. I don't like to see more than 10 threads non-Sleep.
