Parallel testing mysql-5.1.23-beta-GIS / stable version

Hi,

I want to test the mysql-5.1.23-beta-GIS (or is there already a better version?) next to continue using a stable MySQL 5.0 version.
So I have downloaded the binaries and have executed the steps described in the file "INSTALL-BINARY". To be sure I have shut down the stable version, which is located in /var/lib/mysql ( vs. symbolic linked /usr/local/mysql ).

Starting 5.1.23:

The server has not started and I don't get it running.

Any tipps?
