You are not alone on this. I'm having similar problems. It seems like 5.x is significantly slower than 4.1.
I was quite happy to switch to 5 becaues of stored procedure and view support but after testing it for a few days, 5 seems like such a bad idea that I'm considering dropping mysql alltogether in favour of postresql or even Oracle or DB2. (and i'm a heavy mysql user with very very large databases on multiple commercial projects.
The documentation does not help at all, and in some cases even confuses.
Please post back here if you have found a solution to your problem. I'll do the same.
