OK - I was hoping there was some sort of configuration option that I had missed but obviously not!
It's quite unfortunate that quries using joins suffers a very large bottleneck, these tables were only 15,000 rows of data, imagine doing a similar query against hundreds of thousands of rows...
I suppose it's back to the drawing board for me and I'll have to accept that using MySQL Cluster is not an available option until an unknown date when this bottleneck is resolved.
In hindsight, I understand why this happens but it was a problem that I hadn't expected.
Thanks for the replies, it's a sad day for me I was looking forward to using MySQL Cluster!
