Thanks for your answers to my question!

I thought as much, I was just trying to figure out a way to design a flexible system. I guess the only way would be replication on both ends and you'd end up with near-real-time but not quite real time.

I'm also aware of the security concerns, but can't these be overcome by just encrypting the connection over the Internet (and firewalling)?

For example, just using stunnel or something to encrypt over SSL and then setting up the firewall so it only allows access between each others IP addresses. Any packet sniffers won't get anything because it's encrypted and no other computers would have access to the machine.

Would that be secure?
