MYSQL Replication 4.0.X

Does MYSQL REplication require less/equal resources than doing a select into or dumping the data into a flat file?

We need to take the data out of two MYSQL database and correlate the data in a third MYSQL DB..all are the same version and will have access to all data.

Wouls replication be more effcient or writing code?
