well, in our case... replication positions are never the same, as there are hundreds or thousands of transactions replicated per second ;-) so we have to estimate in seconds, not binlog position differences. you might try this method though, if your servers are idle enough, but remember, simple 20-byte ALTER TABLE would be lagging longer than 2000-byte fast insert.
