One performance improvement for replication with a very big lag - days and many log files. I sometimes stop the IO thread, so its disk activity isn't interfering with the SQL thread. It may be useful to have the IO thread be less active when there is a big replication lag. Perhaps sleeping for 30 seconds times the number of relay log files-1 if there was no change on the master since the last check.

Periodic replication like that could also be helpful for reporting slaves, in part because of caching effects.
