sorry for the delayed response. the site has been restored and is now running fine and haven't had any further attacks. although our phpBB based forum did get hacked again.

turns out that the hackers were searching for the string "Powered by phpBB 2.0.8" then exercising their skills on the exploit.

seems to have stopped now, probably due to the search engines cracking down on that string.

haven't done anything to increase security, other than advise our hosting service to upgrade the the latest version of PHP and MySQL. couldn't believe they were using old versions anyway, and i mean old...

anyways, all seems to be good - for the moment :o)
