Oh yeah, How you installed MySQL and phpMyAdmin can make a difference. On a CENTOS install, I used the download from the phpMyAdmin site and all was well. For a Ubuntu install that download blew up on me and was a real slice of @#$%. I don't spend more than a couple of hours tinkering with it because in my experience if I can't find it in a couple of hours it's over my head or maybe there is no solution.

So, I wiped the drive started over and then used the Ubuntu version, not a fan as they generally lag on updating them, and then updated everything via the command line. This works fine so...
