Well, we have the same version mySql. I took the two lines from your message, pasted them into notepad, using Lucida Console, then replaced the * with spaces in the second line. The columns still lined up. So, that is obviously not the answer!

I'd have to play with this for a while to see what's going on or to find another approach. I'll try to get back to you tomorrow.
