I had the same problem few days ago. I checked the version of the following components:
MDAC: odbc32.dll should great than 3.520.6301.x, means mdac have a version of 2.6 above.
ms jet engine, should be above 4.0 with sp5, check the version which should be above 4.0.4431.x
All above on my machine is higher than expected.
Finally, I found that the ms jet I got is 4.0.9x which is updated by the patch called 'upgrade rollup 1 for windows 2000 sp4'. I removed the patch, then the table list was brought back.
