Text indexes will always be on the slow side.
But the major indexing issue that I ran into when going to 4.0 to 4.1 had to do with the introduction of character sets. If you're joining on text fields from different character sets, the text indexes will either be ignored or have a function applied to them to convert the char set, both of which are horribly slow.
